Hand Made Wooden Pens by Rodney Neep

All pens come with an individually numbered certificate signed by Rodney Neep.

The pen comes with a long slender nib, which is nicely flexible. Particularly suited to copperplate style of writing, where you can press a little harder on the downstrokes to get a thicker line of ink.

The band (ferrule) may be either straight or with a little bulge, usually 24ct gold plated, but I make some with a bulged silver or a bulged copper band. Occasionally I use a cast metal (Gold or Chrome plated) ferrule with a Celtic Knot design.

The bulged & banded copper ferrule.

Your Tintern pen comes in a presentation box, together with a certificate signed by Rodney Neep. Each pen, being unique and individually hand crafted, has a serial number.

Serial numbers are allocated sequentially in the order that items are made. (All types of pens and my shaving brushes are in the same numbering sequence). Pen number 1 was made in 2007.

To date (March 2014) only 47 Tintern dip pens have been made.

TINTERN DIP PENS

TRADITIONAL DIP PENS
SIMPLY CLASSY FOR THE CALLIGRAPHER

Beautiful flowing lines, and a pleasure to hold.

Until recently I have only made the odd few of these pens, but I am now adding them to the regular range. When did you last use a real pen and ink? OK, if you are old enough, (like me) then you will remember that was the only option when you were at school. Ballpoint pens were not allowed! So this is a touch of nostalgia. But these pens write beautifully. I call this the Tintern range of pens, named after Tintern Abbey.

I make these dip pens only occasionally. I fit them in when I have a light work load with other products and my general custom work.

The pens are made from various woods, and each has a metal band at the business end. The band may be either straight or with a little bulge, usually 24ct gold plated, but I make some with a silver or a copper band. There is a short length of brass tubing inside the wood, into which a nib holder is mounted. The nib is long and slender and a joy to write with. You can of course easily change the nib to a different one of your choice. (Yes, you can still buy nibs, and in a wide range of types for calligraphy).

Each of these pens is made with the same special care and attention as my more expensive pens, and each comes with a serial numbered certificate signed by Rodney Neep. A short length of brass tube is inset into the business end of the pen which adds a little extra weight for comfort and feel. (If you want an even heavier pen made to custom order, then I can add a little lead into that tube).

TWO BASIC STYLES OF PEN

I make these pens in two styles.

  • Top: Standard. 8mm diameter just above the metal ferrule, bulging out to about 12mm.
  • Bottom: "Mangum" Style with a thicker grip 14mm diameter to feel more like a fountain pen in the hand. (Named after Sally Mangum, renowned calligrapher and heraldic artist, who first commissioned these pens with a wider grip.)

Both these styles have a narrow upper waist, flaring out to a trumpet shaped end in smooth elegant curves. I am often asked if I will make these pens with lots of fancy beadings, balls and grooves. No. I believe in simple yet elegant lines. The most decoration that I might add is one or two very fine grooves. That's it.

The overall length of the pen is usually around 140mm, (from the ferrule to the top end) but I make some that are slightly longer sometimes.

Ebony pens
A batch of eight pens in ebony which I made for Boodle's, a gentlemen's club in London.

Black Palm pen

Three special pens with thicker grips, made for Sally Mangum a calligrapher and heraldic artist.

A few pens made in March 2014

Purpleheart pen

#1834 - Tintern Dip Pen - Purpleheart

This photo was taken just after the pen was finished and it is brown with a slight purple tinge. However, if you leave this wood exposed to daylight then it turns to a delightful purple. Remember to turn it occasionally so that the colour develops evenly.

Bloodwood pen

#1836 - Tintern Dip Pen - Bloodwood Celtic (Mangum Style)

Padauk pen

#1837 - Tintern Dip Pen - Padauk

A stunning wood from central tropical Africa. Padauk has a very unique reddish orange coloration, and the wood is sometimes referred to by the name Vermillion.
(By the way, it is prononced pah-DUKE).

I made this particular pen with a scooped flattened area on one side at the upper end. No real reason other than that it looks good.

London Plane pen

#1843 - Tintern Dip Pen - London Plane (Mangum Style)

London Plane (Planatus acerifolia) is a wood with a lace pattern grain. You would recognise the tree from many city centres where it has naturally exfoliating bark. Surprisingly few are ever cut down and this is therefore a relatively rare wood to obtain.

Just some of the artist and calligraphy pens, mechanical pencils and clutch pencils that I make.

#1846 - Tintern Dip Pen - Cocobolo Celtic

Unusually for Cocobolo, this piece is not dark red with black lines, but is a paler colour with red lines and even some areas of orange. Most unusual.

Boxwood pen

#1850 - Tintern Dip Pen (Mangum Style) - Boxwood

A hard, dense blonde wood. Certainly one of my favourite woods! (This is the wood that old fashioned chess pieces were made from). Gorgeous fine grain. As this wood is so dense, I have hand turned some shallow spiral grooves into the grip area.

Length: 162mm
Beaded Gold Ferrule

That's it for a while. I make these dip pens only occasionally.
